About the Festival

The Origins of the Military Tattoo

The military “Tattoo” tradition began in Europe as a nightly signal calling soldiers back to their quarters. Over centuries, this simple sound evolved into organised military music displays. By the 20th century, it became a full artistic event combining discipline, music, and showmanship.

A Global Cultural Phenomenon

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo held in 1950 was a turning point, transforming military performance into a world-renowned spectacle featuring drums, trumpets, infantry drills, and light shows. Since then, similar festivals have spread across the globe, from Switzerland and Russia to Japan and Australia; each celebrating military heritage and cultural diversity through music and marching.
